Hierarchical heterostructured FeCr–(Mg–Mg2Ni) composite with 3D interconnected and lamellar structures synthesized by liquid metal dealloying

Liquid metal dealloying (LMD) has recently attracted significant attention. Because the LMD process enables production of three-dimensional (3D) interconnected non-noble metallic materials. In addition, melt medium is useful for development heterostructure (HS) metal–metal composites. However, solidified liquid phase (low melting point metals such as Mg, Bi, Sn, or Cu) a much lower strength than developed ligament (e.g., Fe, FeCr, Ti, etc.). this study, soft Mg was strengthened by adding alloying element Ni. A eutectic composition Mg–10 at.% Ni leads to formation fine structure (Mg–Mg2Ni) within 3D morphology. This hierarchical heterostructured composite consisted FeCr and Mg–Mg2Ni lamellar, high yield 280 MPa noticeable elongation (1.5%) were achieved. The complex morphology lamellar geometrically constraint each other, it prevents early fracture brittle phase. alloy design gives insights HS materials with outstanding mechanical properties structural applications.
